About Stockyards.org

Stockyards.org is an independent guide to the stockyards of America — the historic yards that built the cattle trade and the meatpacking industry, and the livestock markets that still buy and sell cattle today. Our goal is to tell the story of each yard clearly and accurately: where it stood, why it mattered, what happened to it, and what you can see or do there now.

For the historic stockyards, that means tracing the arc from the Chisholm Trail and the coming of the railroads, through the packing-house heyday of Chicago, Kansas City, and Omaha, to the decline that closed nearly all of them. For the working markets, it means explaining how a modern cattle auction actually operates — from the sale ring at the Oklahoma National Stockyards to the video auctions of Superior Livestock.

We give special attention to the Fort Worth Stockyards, the country's greatest surviving Western-heritage district, with guides to its cattle drive, rodeo, restaurants, bars, and hotels.
